On 17 June 2021, an exhibition of one of Poland’s most outstanding contemporary artists, Wilhelm Sasnal, opened at the POLIN Museum. It will include paintings and drawings depicting a familiar, if slightly distant, landscape and familiar figures. It is a landscape after the Holocaust.
The relationship of the eye and memory, of touch and forgetting, of the search for language and the loss of speech – these contradictory and often simultaneous experiences describe an abandoned, repressed zone, a zone of shame and curiosity. What is behind this blind wall? In search of answers, Sasnal follows an untravelled path, along which he is led by works dealing with the Holocaust in the language of images and testimonies, such as Art Spiegelman’s comic book Maus, Claude Lanzmann’s film Shoah or the short stories by Tadeusz Borowski
