The new educational centre of Cinqfontaines in North Luxembourg opened this year, a important commemorative place, as tells us David Weis, president of the Liberal Jewish Community of Luxembourg. Here’s our interview regarding this opening as well as the cultural events organized by the liberal community.
Jguideeurope: Last year, your community participated in many cultural events. Can you tell us a bit more about such events?
David Weis: In 2023, our community co-organised the first ever Limmud Luxembourg, which gathered some 300-400 people from across Luxembourg, the Greater Region and Europe for a weekend of learning, music and leadership building. This was really quite extraordinary just two months after Black Shabbat and the shock still felt by many in the Jewish community as a consequence.
Which events are organized this year?
Notable events this year include our Purim party (which attracted some 100 people, half of them children), an inter-religious musical weekend and the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the dedication of our new synagogue (1954-2024), built following the destruction of the pre-war shul by German troops in 1941.
Which place in Luxembourg related to Jewish heritage do you think deserves to be better known?
The new educational centre of Cinqfontaines in North Luxembourg opened this year. Situated in a former monastery it was the place whence many Jews were deported to the East during the German occupation of Luxembourg. The Luxembourg government has bought the former monastery to turn this place of memory into an educational facility about human rights, democracy and civic participation.
