European Days of Jewish Culture / 2025

Esch

In a show of resilience, numerous cultural events are being organised this year, despite the increasingly worrying situation regarding the rise of anti-Semitism. We meet David Weis, president of Luxembourg’s liberal Jewish community.

Which cultural events will you organize in 2025-6?

We hope to organise several more concerts, our usual community events and participate in the 3rd edition of Limmud Luxembourg in April 2026.

Have you witnessed a rising interest in Luxembourg’s Jewish heritage those last years?

Absolutely. As antisemitism hits us very hard, we also see a parallel rise in support for Jewish life and culture among the wider population.

Do you think such cultural events help fight the rise of antisemitism which spread over Europe?

Not really. People like Jewish culture, but they seem bothered by the presence of Jews. Jewish memorials are fine for Europeans, but actual living Jews are not necessarily welcome. What we observe is that some people are increasingly philosemitic, while others no longer care to hide their antisemitic comments and actions.
