This presentation offers an insight into the life of the first female lawyer in modern Morocco, Hélène Cazes Benatar, born in 1898 into a wealthy Sephardic family in Tangier. She also played a significant role during the Second World War, organising a relief operation to assist refugees stranded in North Africa whilst en route to seek asylum in the West. After 1942, she defended the rights of hundreds of former Jewish and non-Jewish soldiers, stateless persons, who had been released from Vichy prisoner-of-war camps in North Africa.0
