To open the 4^th Congress of the Society for Jewish Studies: ‘Power and Vulnerability in History, Texts and Societies’, historian and sociologist Pierre Birnbaum discusses the complexity of the relationship with political power from which Jews have long been excluded throughout history. This is particularly true when a civic and patriotic desire to participate in political life is met with violent reactions, especially in times of crisis.
