Marc Bloch: A Life and Work

Published on 1 June 2026

This event, organised to mark Marc Bloch’s induction into the Panthéon, offers an opportunity to explore the life of the historian and co-founder of the École des Annales, who served as a soldier during both world wars and later joined the Resistance before being arrested and shot by the Gestapo in 1944. The historian Peter Schöttler seeks to reconstruct and recontextualise the intellectual journey, style and thought of Marc Bloch, in whom theory and practice remained closely united until the very end. As part of this event, he will be in conversation with Chloé Leprince, a journalist at France Culture.
