90th anniversary of the Spanish Civil War

To mark the 90th anniversary of the Spanish Civil War, the Memorial is hosting two events:

2.00 pm Lecture: Plural forms of Jewish identity in the International Brigades. This lecture examines the significant participation of Jews in the International Brigades in support of the Spanish Republicans. An exploration of archives and testimonies sheds light on the issues at stake and the determination to fight fascism. With Annabel Gottfried Cohen, PhD student in history at the University of Edinburgh, and Édouard Sill, historian and author of “L’Illusion lyrique” . International Combatant Volunteers in the Spanish Civil War (1936–1938). In conversation with Alain Lewkowicz, journalist and producer at France Culture.

4.30pm Screening: Madrid Before Hanita by Eran Torbiner. This 2006 Israeli documentary traces the story of 300 Jewish volunteers who left Palestine to join the International Brigades. In the presence of Jean-Charles Szurek, Emeritus Research Director at the CNRS, son of International Brigade fighter Alexander Szurek and author of Gabriel Ersler. From the International Brigades to Soviet Prisons, the Other Red Orchestra (Hermann, 2023). In conversation with Annabel Gottfried Cohen.
