The Eruv – a small string or other form of boundary marking that encircles a town – enables practising Jews to carry items on Shabbat and Jewish festivals. It has been in use in certain European towns for centuries. The workshop led by Christina Meri explores the meaning and significance of this symbol in Judaism and presents original documents. On the same day, at 6.30 pm, Rabbi Elimelech Vanzetta, Dr Roland Fried and Manuel Herz will present historical and contemporary perspectives on the Basel Eruv.
