A Jewish joke, typical of the black humour that is one of its hallmarks, tells of two Holocaust victims talking together in Heaven and bursting out laughing. God, greatly surprised by the sound of their laughter, approaches the men and expresses his astonishment at their ability to laugh. One of the two Jewish men then turns to God and says: ‘You can’t understand; you weren’t there.’ One cannot help but think of this deeply meaningful joke when considering the play, which depicts a confrontation between an atheist Jew and what he perceives as the absence of God, despite the fact that his father was murdered at Auschwitz. Difficult and painful questions are addressed in this intimate play regarding religious connection in the broadest sense.
