Porto is one of the cities experiencing one of the most beautiful contemporary revivals of its Jewish life. We meet with leaders of the Jewish community, who reveal their upcoming cultural projects…

Jguideeurope: What events will be organised during the EDJC?
We will organise a tour of the central synagogue, a visit to the art gallery, the Jewish museum and the Holocaust museum. A performance by the liturgical choir is also planned, as well as the opening of restaurants.
There will also be screenings of the films 1618, 1506 and 2000 Jewish Children Exiled.
How did the public react to the two films screened during last year’s EDJC?
Impressed. The country has had a film industry for a century and it was up to our community to make 1618, the most award-winning film in the history of Portuguese cinema.
Do you think that Barros Basto’s memory is well shared today? Has it evolved over the years?
Barros Basto’s goal was to promote Jewish religion, culture and history. In terms of promoting culture and history, we would like to know if there is another Jewish community in the world as complete as ours. In the religious sphere, I would like to draw your attention to this recent news item: https://portuguesejewishnews.com/news/kadoorie-mekor-haim-synagogue-completes-a-decade-with-a-minyan-on-sabbath-and-holidays/
Are you involved in the creation of the Tikva Museum?
We have two museums to manage. Both were built in a matter of months. We hope that the museum in Lisbon will open soon.
