The Jewish Museum Vienna remains very active and has put together a wonderful programme for this year’s European Days of Jewish Culture. Natascha Golan, Head of Media Relations, introduces us to this programme as well as an upcoming exhibition…
Jguideeurope: Are you organizing events related to the EDJC?
Natascha Golan: Yes, we are participating in the European Days of Jewish Culture on 6 September 2026. This year’s theme, “Love,” is reflected in our special guided tour, “It Is What It Is,” inspired by the famous poem by Viennese poet Erich Fried. Together with our visitors, we explore love in its many forms through objects and stories from the museum’s collection—from famous couples and marriages to marriage contracts, divorce, and even the love of God. The tour offers a unique perspective on Jewish history, culture, and tradition. Participation is free with a valid museum admission ticket.
Is the exhibition “A Muslim, a Christian, and a Jew – Eran Shakine” presented in a spirit of tikkun olam after such difficult years since 2023?
The exhibition is not conceived explicitly through the concept of tikkun olam. Rather, it invites visitors to reflect on coexistence, dialogue, and shared humanity through Eran Shakine’s artistic perspective. Especially in light of the societal developments since 2023, the exhibition offers an important space for conversation and encourages encounters across religious and cultural boundaries.
Which objects and documents has the museum received recently?
The museum continues to expand its collection with donations and acquisitions that document Jewish life in Vienna from the past to the present. Recent additions include personal documents, photographs, correspondence, ceremonial objects, and everyday items that enrich our collection and help preserve individual stories for future generations.
Are schools participating in programs to teach Austrian Jewish heritage?
Yes. Working with schools is one of the museum’s core activities. Every year, hundreds of pupils participate in guided tours and educational workshops tailored to different age groups. Our programs foster knowledge about Austrian Jewish history, culture, and contemporary Jewish life while encouraging critical thinking about antisemitism, democracy, and social responsibility.
