The Algarve region is famous for its monuments illustrating the various historical conquests and local influences, such as the Roman ruins of Cerro da Vila and Silves Castle.
Faro was a major printing centre, where Samuel Portera printed one of the first Portuguese books in 1481. Faro also became an important place for the conversos, following the Inquisition.
