
The city of Jozefów possesses a beautiful late-seventeenth century synagogue . It can be seen almost immediately upon arriving in the village, on the right and set back a bit in relation to the city center and the intersection of Górnicza and Krótka streets. It was rebuilt in the 1990s and converted into a public library with one distinctive feature: upstairs, a doctors office and hotel are located in the former women’s gallery.
On 13 July 2022, a commemorative plaque was unveiled to mark the 80th anniversary of Operation Reinhardt. The monument, designed by Jerzy Kalina, is a joint project between the Warsaw Ghetto Museum, the mayor of Józefów, Roman Dziura, and Paweł Byra, president of the Józefów High School Alumni Association. During the ceremony, attended by political authorities (Polish and German), associations and religious leaders (Jewish and Catholic), mention was made of the importance of linking the past to the future and working towards a better way of living together in a spirit of Tikun olam. Bishop Mieczyslaw Cisło recalled the words of John Paul II condemning anti-Semitism.
An exhibition devoted to Jewish printing in the Lublin region was presented in November 2024, as part of a partnership between the Warsaw Jewish Community, the Lublin Jewish Foundation, the Grodzka Gate Centre – NN Theatre and the Municipal Public Library in Józefów. The exhibition entitled ‘Enigmas from the book collection of the Chachmei Lublin Yeshiva’ was opened at the Library.
Hundreds of books with stamps from the Lublin Yeshiva can be found in libraries around the world. The exhibition tells the story of Jewish printing in the Lublin and Józefów regions and the fate of the Lublin Yeshiva’s book collection.
