Alentejo

This region of Portugal is particularly popular with visitors for its many vestiges of different eras and cultural influences, as well as its vast plains and olive groves. In the Alentejo region, you can wander through the old Jewish quarters of Monsaraz and Santarem, where traces of the past can still be seen. Or discover the vestiges of Jewish life of yesteryear at the Evora museum. Not forgetting Beja, a major centre of Marranism. But the memory is also literary, in the image of Castelo de Vide, the town of Garcia da Orta, author of a great medical treatise.
